AI is invading our lives, but can sometimes be useful — for example, ChatGPT is pretty good at reformatting contra dances! In Philly we have mostly multi-caller evenings, where the coordinator gets dance submissions from many callers (in many formats), creates a program, and sends out the result. Sometimes the program looks like a fruit salad of formats, but (OCD?) I like everything to be concise and uniform. See example below, where ChatGPT unifies dances in 4 formats — Callers Box, one posted here, my website, and Bob Isaacs’ format. It took a few tries to refine the instructions (and I only tried this one output format), but in the end it’s a pretty amazing result from minimal instructions in plain English. New dances: Set and Link Contras

I wrote this up as a blog post <https://chromamine.com/2024/11/set-and-link-contras/>, but I also thought this list would appreciate it and have interesting thoughts to share. It occurred to me recently that I don’t think there are any contra dances that feature a set and link figure. This is a figure from Scottish Country Dancing which follows this sequence (assuming becket formation for this write up): 1. Couples face the other couple across the set, taking convenient hands with their partner along the side 2. All balance right and left (4 beats) 3. All turn over their right shoulder as they trade places along the side of the set with the robins going through the middle and larks going round the outside (4 beats) It could be thought of as a petronella twirl for two or, perhaps, as a mad robin halfway with twirling. (Note the video is to a leisurely Scottish strathspey, but it can be done to a jig or reel at contra tempo just fine.) I decided to write a couple: *Set And Link Contra* Harris Lapiroff Becket CCW A1 Set and link (trading with partner) Balance the ring Petronella twirl A2 Neighbor balance and swing B1 Set and link (trading with neighbor) Balance the ring Petronella twirl B2 Partner balance and swing Note A1: Each time through after the first, the set and link should start with a big balance to the right to progress to new neighbors And a slightly more complex, but still accessible, one: *Broken Link* Harris Lapiroff Duple Improper A1 Neighbor balance and swing A2 Set and link (trading with neighbor) Robins alle L 1½ B1 Partner right shoulder round Partner swing B2 Circle left 3 Pass through up and down Next neighbor DSD Note: Can also be done in becket by starting with B2, skipping the pass through, and changing to a slide left progression at the end. I danced these through with a few dancers in a living room and they worked. I was worried the “Set And Link Contra” wasn’t appropriate for any crowd, being too simple and repetitive for an experienced dance but too tricky for beginners. Some of my test dancers agreed, but others thought that it was satisfying enough to dance to work – which I could see maybe working for a late evening brain-off-dance-trance vibe. A few open questions I have about these dances: - In “Set And Link Contra,” is the big balance right to progress satisfying or awkward? We didn’t have enough dancers to test the progression. A different option might be to make it Becket CW and slide left, then balance back to the right. (I suspect slide right, balance right would feel too muddy.) - The balance right and then left sequence isn’t natural to contra dancers. Is there a way to lead into it that makes it more natural? (Notably: a couple of my test dancers had done at least a little Scottish and they both liked it, but one dancer who had only done contra found it awkward.) - Alternatively is there a different way of doing that balances that would be more at home in a contra? I think balancing together and away wouldn’t give good momentum into turning over the right shoulder, but perhaps balancing in and out in a ring would work? - In “Broken Link,” I’m still not sure if the set and link into a robins left hand allemande sequence feels good. When I tested it myself it felt flowy in a weaving sort of way, but some of my test dancers reported it was awkward. We didn’t take time to workshop it to see if the flow felt better once the set and link was more familiar.

Statement of Work for calling a one-night stand

I was called on Tuesday by someone looking for an hour of dancing at their church retreat this Saturday. We talked and quickly agreed on the parameters. Then, she asked for an invoice and a statement of work. Hmmm. I have not called that many one-night stands, and this is the first time I've been asked for either. So, of course, I asked ChatGPT. It produced the SOW below. Is it missing anything important? Does anyone here use a contract or SOW and is willing to share it? (Is the SOW below in fact *your* SOW, scraped in the training of ChatGPT??) The prompt was: "Write the Statement of Work for a contract for a contra dance caller who will teach and lead community dances (circles, contra dances, and related dance forms) to a group for one hour. The caller will bring their own music and microphone and will connect to the host organization's sound system." I looked at CDSS and found Erik Hoffman's excellent, short guide. It has a super-simple SOW, too. I'm wondering if there are terms one should add involving liability or such. Should I be worried that, if one person doesn't like it, I won't satisfy the "enjoyable experience for all" clause? (I mean, I'll do my best!) A quick search at CALLERLAB didn't turn up anything, but it's a big site. bringing back waltz line of direction

There used to be a strong community tradition about the flow of waltzing at contra dances. It was fast around the outside and stationary in the middle. You could do a nice Viennese, flying around the outside of the hall with no trouble, except in the most crowded of halls. You could do tricks galore standing virtually still. You could do everything in between. There were a lot fewer collisions, despite some much-faster-moving dancers. Halls were at least as crowded as they are today. Today, that's a near-impossibility in many halls. There tends to be a slow-circulating middle, but there isn't the former gradient of speeds outside of that zone that increases options while reducing collisions. It's all just a slow-moving mass, and people are so focused on their partners that collisions are common. I think everyone's enjoyment would increase if we followed four simple considerations: a) If someone passes you on the inside, you are a slower-circulating couple and should move closer to the middle, b) If you pass someone on the inside, you are a faster-circulating couple and should move farther out, c) Moving counter-flow or wagging strongly sideways (much more than just a side-by-side promenade) in the traveling ring are no-nos, d) Both partners really need to look out for others all the time and protect each other from collisions, elbows to the face, etc. This is not just the lead's job, especially if they're being considerate and moving backward for a substantial portion of the time. I hope this is on-topic for this group. Callers are the evening's MCs, but they usually don't have much to do with waltzes, other than to announce them. However, what I'm talking about here would probably come about if callers a) announce it and b) include it in their waltz lesson, if they hold one. Bringing back waltz line of direction (Joe Harrington)

Hi Joe, I’m so glad you suggested this! I’ve been contra dancing about 8 years and have NEVER heard anyone describe the waltz circulating convention (counter-clockwise, faster toward outside). It would be SO easy to just announce it (not every time, but even a few times a year would eventually get the info/convention out there to everyone.) I will try to remember to suggest it from the stage if I ever get to call again! (I just moved from Toronto, where I called 2 or 3 times a year, to Bowen Island BC where if I want a contra dance I will have to start it myself!)
