Need help fitting to a tune

A local band here plays Beaumont Rag As a part of their routine dance set. It’s a popular band. I’ve never experienced a contra dance The band has chosen to play for a dance work. It doesn’t work for the dancers and it’s agonizing for the caller. Can anyone suggest a dance that could fit? At this point I’m planning to request they don’t include the tune. Not all of them are 32 bars long. and it is often played as a "show off' tune at Bluegrass festivals, i.e. REALLY FAST!!! the tune is pretty much fun if played AABB at a reasonable tempo.. A confrontational compromise to decline to pair a dance with the tune would be to suggest the band play it at the break for a couples dance.

Tempus Fugit

I'm trying to understand exactly what you want. Some "beats" look to be longer than others in your outline. In the following abc-notation style text score, "|" indicates a measure boundry, "s" indicates hand shaking and "x" indicates other notes/actions. Each note is followed by a length - 1=quarter note, 2=half note, 4=whole note. Were you thinking of something like this: s1 s1 s2 | s1 s1 s2 | x4 | x4 | x1 x1 x1 x1 | Contra tunes are typically written in 2/2 time - two beats per measure. In the first measure above, "s1 s1" consumes one beat, and "s2" is the second beat. What's the rest of the dance? Hi Linda, I'm not understanding, really, the 8 beats of shaking hands thing cuz, as I read it, just about any danceable tune in 4/4 or 2/4 would do the trick. The Weaving Way
