It may be able to do an old-style boolean search for keywords. There is no
modern, natural-language search capability, like you get from Duckduckgo,
Google, Bing, etc.

It isn't true.
Groups.io has a Search that supports exact phrases (using double quotes,)
exclusions (using minus/dash,) wildcards (using *) and Boolean operators
(e.g. AND, OR and NOT.) You can also filter by date.
