Announcing View from the Balcony: A New SubStack about Contra Dance Organizing From Brooklyn Contra

Hi Y'all, Just wanted to reach out and let folks know that Brooklyn Contra has launched a brand new SubStack to post some of our thinking about dance organizing and resources we're creating for ourselves and others! We'd love for folks to subscribe if they want, but also, we're planning on posting each individual post here for people to respond to, rather than have a big comments section on the SubStack, and we'll be doing the same thing on the Organizers of Contra Facebook Group. Dance organizer discussion happening at the Flurry - your ideas???! :)

Hi fellow dance organizers :) Just a heads up that the annual organizers discussion at the Dance Flurry is happening again this year! My thought is to do similar to last year and have folks share as many best practices/great ideas as possible from their home communities so we can all learn about neat ideas that we can take home with us. Dance weekend brochures - to mail or not mail

We are debating the impact (and org expense) of mailing brochures to weekend past and present weekend event participants or interested parties. Our team is split in their opinions and so wanted to reach out for thoughts and experiences. The brochure will be available to view and download from website. W-9s/1099’s for weekend talent process

Hi all, I’m a new treasurer for an organization that is preparing to hold it’s first weekend since before the pandemic. We are a registered 501c3 non-profit operating at less than 50K per year. We will be paying our talent more than the threshold for filing 1099’s ($600+), thus it is my understanding that we’ll need to get our talent to fill out W9s and send them 1099s for their 2024 taxes. Past treasurers do not recall filing 1099s for weekend talent in the past, however rates have gone up and the threshold for filing has gone down. Can an presently active/experienced treasurer confirm or correct my understanding of this situation and give any insight to the process, please? Dance organizer discussion at the Flurry - what would be most useful to you???

Hi fellow dance organizers! There's going to be a dance organizers discussion at this year's Dance Flurry! (Sunday 12:15-1:45) For those of you attending the Flurry and interested in talking shop, I'd love to hear what would be most useful to you for that 1.5hrs! And even if you aren't attending the Flurry, what would you want to be talking about/getting out of an in-person organizer discussion these days? I've hosted this session for a number of years now and it's always been wonderful to connect with fellow organizers.
